Riot Fest 2014 Day 3

I got to Riot Fest quite a bit after the gates opened for the third and final day.  The few bands I saw though definitely left a lasting impression.

Andrew W.K.

Andrew W.K.
at Humboldt Park 9/14/2014
The party-punk act Andrew W.K. is pretty well described within the title of its genre.  Prior to seeing them, I heard from a few people that Andrew W.K. puts on a pretty good live show and this show, indeed, did not disappoint.  Although I am not too familiar with their music, this show sounded pretty good.  It failed to make me want to go all out and party but it certainly kept my attention.

Dropkick Murphys

Dropkick Murphys
at Humboldt Park 9/14/2014
I saw the Dropkick Murphys at Riot Fest two years ago and I can say with a load of confidence that their show never plays out the same way twice.  The energy and excitement from the first show was just as immense at this show and the crowd was just as into it as ever.  If you are a fan of the Dropkick Murphys and have not seen them live, you really need to.

Social Distortion

Social Distortion
at Humboldt Park 9/14/2014
Like a few of the old school punk bands, Social Distortion still sounds great despite their age.  They still bring a ton of energy to the stage and care deeply for their craft.  Even if you are unfamiliar with Social Distortion's music, you will definitely recognize hits such as "Story of My Life" and "Ball and Chain" which are huge crowd pleasers that you will find yourself singing to along with everyone else in attendance.

Weezer

Weezer was definitely one of the main bands I was looking forward to at Riot Fest this year because they were listed to play through their 20th anniversary debut album more commonly known as "The Blue Album."  Before diving into the album, Weezer decided to do a bit of a gimmick where they played a major single from each album (well not quite all the albums) in reverse chronological order until they reached 1994.  Confusing?  Well, let me explain it.  Weezer started by playing "Back to the Shack" (2014) which the corresponding album hadn't even been released yet.  Then they played "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" (2009), followed by "Pork and Beans" (2008), "Beverly Hills" (2005), "Hash Pipe" (2001), "El Scorcho" (1996), and then they played through "The Blue Album."  Make sense?

Weezer at Humboldt Park 9/14/2014

The main course was better than hoped for.  Despite technical issues with the monitors causing "Hash Pipe" to be a tempo nightmare, "The Blue Album" was truly better than I had expected.  As a group, Weezer sounded crisp and together song after song.  All of the singles from the album such as "Buddy Holly," "Undone," and "Say It Ain't So," really got the crowd going.  I was really excited to hear "Only in Dreams" which I had wanted to hear Weezer play live since I was a kid.  "Only in Dreams" was, for me, the best part of the concert because it was a big, emotional, finish to a really good set and great run through of an album.  The band was together the whole song and Rivers poured as much emotion into the guitar work at the end of the song as he had in '94.  It was truly breathtaking and truly spectacular.

1/28/2015
Another year of Riot Fest has come and gone and I still hold onto all of the great moments in some of my darkest hours in present day.  It's easy to lose a grip on reality and live in the past but I figure it's better to use my memories to help keep an emotional hold on myself instead of falling into deep despair.  When I think about the great mosh pits this year, the gash I got on the side of my head during Streetlight Manifesto, the black-eye I obtained during The Dropkick Murphys, the high energy of The Descendants, the incredible, propaganda, filled show of Anti-Flag, the meet and greet with Anti-Flag, the heartfelt vocals and mellow guitar work of Dashboard Confessional, and of course, the mud and rain that made everything even more fantastic, I can't help but to think that nothing has truly been better to me in life than this annual festival.

As you may anticipate, I have already bought my 3-day pass for Riot Fest 2015.  I managed to obtain one during the first holiday pre-sale which was as expensive as the secondary pre-sale the previous year.  Actually, it was even more expensive this year due to an added "Municipal" fee; probably due to the fact that Humboldt park got completely trashed from the rain and stampeding people.  But, you know what?  It's understandable.  I'll pay every penny if it means that this festival can live on.

Because there isn't anything in this world that's quite like it.

Riot Fest 2014 Day 2

Frnkiero andThe Cellabration

Frank Iero at Humboldt Park 9/13/2014
Definitely showed up early to see ex-My Chemical Romance member and one of my heroes play in his new band.  For those of you that don't know, Frank Iero has had the most influence on me as far as music is concerned (more specifically, stage presence) so I was pretty interested to see what direction he has gone in with this solo project.

Frnkiero andThe Cellabration puts on a pretty solid show.  They certainly won't blow you away or leave you awestruck but they sound okay and keep your interest for the whole set.  For those of you curious, Frank is still using the Epiphone Wilshire that he used in the last couple of years with My Chemical Romance.

Anti-Flag

Anti-Flag at Humboldt Park 9/13/2014
Anti-Flag brings to you about what you would expect and a whole lot more.  They sound pretty close to their albums and give a passionate performance about sociopolitical issues that they want to raise awareness about.  For as early on in the day as they performed, they managed to get the crowd into it causing a well-maintained mosh pit with an occasional circle pit for the whole show.

I've been waiting for awhile to see Anti-Flag and they certainly don't disappoint.  Anti-Flag will stand out even among the best punk shows at Riot Fest.

Streetlight Manifesto

Streetlight Manifesto
at Humboldt Park 9/13/2014
Prior to Riot Fest, I had heard a lot about Streetlight Manifesto's live show and how great it was so I had to check it out.  Although it didn't quite live up to the hype, Streetlight Manifesto is still a pretty incredible ska show.  Like most ska shows, the crowd was incredibly into it and really formed a sense of community instead of just brainless smashing into each other.  However, in my opinion, these kinds of pits aren't necessarily better than the traditional punk pits, just a different flavor of the same thing.

Though I failed to see what made Streetlight Manifesto a better show than any of the other major ska bands, I still thoroughly enjoyed their show and would put it right there with Reel Big Fish.

I still have no doubt in my mind that Slapstick is the best ska band I have ever seen live.  They sound fantastic and the show truly turns into a party.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
at Humboldt Park 9/13/2014
Another pretty good ska show to add to the lineup, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones put on a solid show as well.  Although their show is pretty good, you will struggle to find anything that's particularly memorable about The Mighty Mighty Bosstones other than their red jackets.

Oh, and their backup dancer.  He's freaking awesome.

Dashboard Confessional

Dashboard Confessional
at Humboldt Park 9/13/2014
Quite frankly, Dashboard Confessional blew me away.  Considering the difficulty of the vocals on the albums, I expected this show to not sound that great.  Well, I was completely taken by surprise!  Not only did Chris Carrabba sound just like the album (for the most part) there were some pretty high parts that he decided to take up an octave, it was truly incredible!

Dashboard Confessional proved to be a great change of pace for Riot Fest with a slow paced show with acoustic guitars and clean guitars.  They don't play live much anymore but I would love to see Dashboard Confessional again in a more intimate setting rather than a giant festival since their show is rather low key.

If you get the chance to see Dashboard Confessional, I would certainly not let the opportunity pass.  Even if you're not a fan of emo music, I think they're still worth a shot.

The Used

The Used at Humboldt Park 9/13/2014
I didn't get to see much of The Used but from what I saw, they played a high energy, high production show that really drew the crowd in.  They also sounded particularly good, especially for an emo band (which I've found emo bands have a general tendency to lose quite a bit of sound quality in their live shows opposed to their respective studio albums).  All in all, a really good show and I wish I could have seen the whole thing.

The Descendents
The Descendents
at Humboldt Park 9/13/2014

What a great way to end the night!  The Descendents were freaking awesome despite the lack of light show or gimmicks (a true indication of a great live band in my opinion).  It was a special night because they played through their ground-breaking Milo Goes to College record with their original bass player Tony Lombardo.  This doesn't sound very significant but those familiar with Milo Goes to College know that there are some pretty nifty bass parts throughout the album.

Despite their age, The Descendents truly rocked the Riot Stage.  Their energy reminded me a lot of Bad Religion last year.

The Descendents are definitely a band worth checking out if you are into punk and have not listened to them before.  Just do a YouTube search of Milo Goes to College, you will not get lost.

Riot Fest 2014 Day 1

GWAR

Now that I've seen GWAR twice, I can say with confidence that GWAR is a show that never disappoints.  If you like comedy, GWAR definitely gives you it in its gory glory.  They don't waste anytime getting someone in a President Obama costume on-stage and immediately cutting of his head, spraying blood from the neck stump into the crowd.  Some other scenes include:  a villain with a buzz saw spraying blood all over, slaying a tyrannosaurus rex by stabbing it through the roof of its mouth, a cow utter with dicks on it ejaculating blood, a woman with tits that spray blood out of the nipples, and a game show where contestants get decapitated after inevitably getting answers to questions wrong.

Does the buzz saw wielding maniac survive the wrath of the prehistoric nightmare?
Find out in this episode of Transformers:  Villains Go to Delta House.

What I thought was particularly funny about the game show was that when the last contestant was supposed to be decapitated, the woman with the blood spraying nipples had trouble getting the prop head to detach from the body when she clubbed it with her prop sword a few times.  So she just tore it off, spraying blood out of the neck stump.  The remaining corpse immediately started head banging (or neck stump banging I suppose) hosing down the crowd with a steady stream of blood.

I think that everyone should see GWAR at least once.  Unless if you're easily offended.

Failure

Failure Live at Humboldt Park
9/12/2014

The best way to describe Failure would probably be that they are a very laid back, very polished sounding Industrial Rock group.  They certainly aren't bad and I will probably check out more of their stuff later.  The amount of bass guitar was almost unbearable though.  I thought the sound guy was trying to kill us by blasting our hearts through our rib cages.  It's a shame when really cool bands aren't mixed right.  This was definitely one of those occasions.

Their music is definitely something I could see myself listening to on a lonely Saturday night.  If you're looking for something to mosh to at a punk rock festival, this isn't it.

Clutch

Clutch Live at Humboldt Park 9/12/2014
Although they were pretty overshadowed by some of the other acts this weekend, Clutch still put on a semi-memorable show.  The bluesy hard rock band maintains your attention with cool guitar riffs and intense vocals.  It won't be enough to make you want to destroy someone in the mosh pit but your head will continue to move up and down from start to finish.  They're worth seeing if there isn't someone else more worthwhile to see.

NOFX

NOFX Live at Humboldt Park 9/12/2014
NOFX will give you the fantastic package of San Francisco punk and alcohol-induced crude humor.  Playing through their Punk in Drublic album was fitting to go along with bashing Chicago's climate and socio-political issues.  After shredding through Punk in Drublic in record time, they decided to play some other songs and ended with a song that was about 5 whole minutes in (a long time for a punk song) before getting cut off by festival management.  After commenting about how it was fair to follow the rules despite being an unpunk thing to do, Fat Mike and company grudgingly left the stage with their ridiculously long song unfinished.

The Offspring
The Offspring Live at Humboldt Park 2014
The Offspring rocked through their '94 album Smash (though I'm fairly certain they didn't play every song) and followed it up with some of their biggest hits.  Despite very few attempts to interact with the crowd, The Offspring had great presence and kept the crowd interested.  For the most part, they sounded like their records with the exception of "The Kids Aren't Alright" which sounded particularly unpolished but, nonetheless, still a good performance.

Slayer

Wait... what band is in that fog?
Live at Humboldt Park 2014
Slayer was pretty okay.  They sound just like the studio albums while basking in an overabundance of dry ice and pyrotechnics.  What more could a Slayer fan ask for?

Rise Against

Rise Against played all of the songs that you would expect them to play plus a couple of Ramones covers with Fat Mike from NOFX.  This was particularly funny since he was drunk as hell; coming onto the stage stumbling with nothing nice to say.  As soon as Fat Mike came on, Tim McIlrath sarcastically announced that he would immediately regret the decision to invite him on.

Beyond that, Rise Against's set was a lot like how it was for Riot Fest 2012.  Fast-paced, intense, and emotional.

Below is the video of Fat Mike singing Ramones covers with Rise Against.  The link starts the video when it really starts getting good.

Riot Fest 2014 - Table of Contents

*Note:  I can't believe Riot Fest was about four months ago already!  On those really shitty days I still reminisce about it to keep my sanity.  Most of the reviews that these four posts contain were written shortly after Riot Fest but none of them were edited or expressed as full functioning thoughts until now so it's really too bad I couldn't get this out sooner but well, you know, Life Happens...

This year I have decided to create a table of contents page for Riot Fest.  This way you can find reviews of specific bands much easier instead of searching each of the posts that I've made until you find what you're looking for.

There was a lot of hype for this year's Riot Fest and for good reason.  Although last year's lineup was rather good, the sheer quantity of big name punk bands this year really got people talking when the lineup was announced.  There was absolutely no way I would be able to see all of the bands that I wanted to see which was saddening but it's still a very good problem to have.  In my humble opinion, this is especially so if you compare it to Lollapalooza's lackluster lineup this year.

So this is by no means a complete listing of all of the bands at Riot Fest (though I did see a lot of bands).  If you would like to check out the schedule for Chicago Riot Fest 2014 to see what I mean, click here.

It Happened Again

As you all can see, I have not continued to post on this blog as I had promised in October of last year.  I cannot make any promises that I will be able to consistently post as I have potentially the busiest semester of my college career just heating up.  However, I can say that I will definitely put in a better effort to get posts out.  The posts that I have partially written or in revision stages are now more dated than ever; but you will still find them posted on here, hopefully sometime in the near future.

I have come to realize that this blog is one of the few things in my life that allows me to escape some of the less-than-ideal aspects of my social and educational life so it is necessary for me to continue to write this blog.  For those of you that have asked me and would like to continue to read future posts, I am appreciative that you enjoy this blog as much as I do.

So, without further ado, it's time to get started.
